326. Devi 2; movie review

DEVI 2
Cert 12A
125 mins
BBFC advice: Contains moderate violence

Indians really must be obsessed with the possessed. If not, why are there so many movies about ghosts coming out of the sub-continent?
And I cannot recall seeing a good one. Devi 2 is typical of the movies whose makers cannot seem to decide whether they are comedy or horror.
Inevitably, they end up being neither.
This has the very odd concept of a husband's body being shared by the spirits of two recently deceased young men.
Thus, Prabhu Deva plays three roles in one - the first is the hard-working other half of a beautiful wife (Tamannaah) with whom he has moved to Mauritius, the second is a lovelorn band member who was killed in an accident and the third is a bit of a thug.
Being possessed is becoming a bit of a habit in the household because his wife was similarly cursed in the first Devi film.
If that was nearly as woeful as this, I am glad that I missed out on it.
Anyway, the spirits cause all sorts of mayhem for their host because they are in love with two separate women (Nandita Swetha and Dimple Hayathi).
Misunderstandings follow beatings, follow misunderstandings follow beatings and shouting and screeching and anything apart from actual comedy.
Not only is A.L. Vijay's movie unfunny, but it is also tedious and nearly impossible to follow.
But that didn't stop its makers leave the potential for another follow-up at the end!

Reasons to watch: Wacky comedy horror
Reasons to avoid: Yet another bad Indian film about ghosts

Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 2.5/10

Did you know? Prabhu Deva was inspired by his father Mugur Sundar, a choreographer four South Indian movies, to take up dancing.

Final word. Tamannaah: "I don’t like jump scares in films, and I can’t watch a horror film alone. I got so scared after I saw House Of Wax that I stayed away from anything to do with wax or waxing for nearly a month (laughs). Although I’ve been part of films like Devi, Devi 2, Khamoshi, and a couple of more upcoming films, there’s no gore in these films.' Firstpost
