327. Papi Chulo; movie review

PAPI CHULO
Cert 15
94 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong language

Perhaps I shouldn't appeal so often for film-makers to give us something different and then complain when they do and their efforts misfire.
Therefore, I shall look at the positives of Papi Chulo and congratulate director John Butler on its second half rather than moan about its first 45 minutes.
Thankfully, our powers of perseverance reaped a small reward because the movie was hauled out of what Mrs W and I perceived as its doldrums.
Indeed, it turned out we had completely misunderstood the motives of its central character, a Californian weatherman, played by Matt Bomer.
He has a breakdown live on air and is given time to rest by his boss.
During this time he makes endless unanswered calls to the boyfriend with whom he appears to have split.
And such is his loneliness that when he appoints a painter (Alejandro Patiño) for his home, he pays him instead for companionship.
They make a very odd couple - the handsome young gay guy and the ageing married Mexican who cannot even speak the same language.
It is such a strange scenario and the weatherman's motivations are so difficult to fathom that we struggled to bend our minds around the movie's point.
And then all becomes clear - we had been missing one vital fact which made it all make sense.
This led us to reflect more deeply on this unusual but tender relationship between two men who appeared to have nothing in common.
Nevertheless, I cannot give it better than 6/10 because it took far too long to get to its point.

Reasons to watch: Offbeat drama
Reasons to avoid: Takes too long to get going

Laughs: One

Vomit: Yes
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 6/10

Did you know? According to Forbes, the average "weathercaster" is one of the highest-paid positions in a newsroom with an average of $74,100.

Final word. Alejandro Patiño: “It had heart. These types of characters just aren’t highlighted enough. When I read it, I thought, ‘This is going to be magic." Remezcla
