135. Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal; movie review

KANNUM KANNUM KOLLAIYADITHAAL
Cert 12A
160 mins
BBFC advice: Contains infrequent moderate violence

It's been a big hit among Tamil movie fans and I can see why - Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal has glamour, a few giggles and enough twists and turns to keep audiences happy.
Indeed, despite its box office success, it could probably have earned even more if it hadn't been for the Coronavirus outbreak.
I have to confess, I fell for the cheekiness of thieves, Sid (Dulquer Salmaan) and Kallis (DJ Rakshan) who go about elaborate scams to build up a nice income.
However, Desingh Periyasamy's film didn't score higher in my eyes because the detail of its crimes is sometimes hard to follow and it goes on for at least 30 minutes too long.
The two tech criminals surround themselves with girls as they live the high life but Sid's head is turned when he meets Meera (Ritu Varma).
Indeed, he falls for her so madly that he tries desperately to grab her attention.
Once he achieves, his pal also goes gooey-eyed over her best friend (Niranjani Ahathian).
However, despite their apparently growing love for each other, these girls may not be quite what they seem.
Meanwhile, the police are gradually getting closer to the boys so they need to make sure they aren't caught as they are distracted by romance.
Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithal is superior to almost all Tamil movies released this year.
It looks spectacular with sets in what appears to be an endless list of beautiful properties in a string of India's major cities.
Salman and Varma scrub up particularly well but this is an ugly-free zone - even the cop (Gautham Vasudev Menon) is a handsome dude with a wardrobe to match his good looks.
But what really wins the day are the often abrupt swerves in the storyline which keep the audience engaged right to the end.

Did you know? Dulquer Salmaan moved to the United States and earned a bachelor's degree in Business Management from Purdue University. After graduation, he worked in the U.S. and in an IT-related business in Dubai.

The final word. "KKK is not a rom-com, if that’s what you are thinking. It has romance, is racy in parts and has a thriller element to it. In terms of my line-up this year, I think KKK stands out.” The Hindu
