141. Like A Boss; movie review

LIKE A BOSS
Cert 15

BBFC advice: Contains strong language, sex references, drug misuse

The movie poster states: "The world of beauty is about to get ugly". Too right. But not in the way it is intended.
I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when they final edit of Like A Boss was presented.
How did the studio bosses react? Did they honestly think that people would laugh when they saw it?
Did they believe that the director had elicited the best from three well-established actresses?
Rose Byrne and Tiffany Haddish are a combo which couldn't fail at the box office and Selma Hayek added even greater certainty of success.
But I pity those who paid money either at the cinema or during its early VoD run, precipitated by the Coronavirus outbreak.
Byrne and Haddish play lifelong best friends, Mel and Mia, who run their own beauty parlour which, unknown to the creative Mia, is making huge losses.
Yes, she is unaware that their dream business is on the cusp of closure because her best pal hasn't told her.
Surely, she would need to be as thick as a brick not to notice the lack of customers and income but, hey, that is far from the only problem with Like A Boss.
Miguel Arteta's feel is so screechy it demands its audience uses ear protectors and its characters are ludicrously shallow.
Haddish's Mia may have creative abilities but is ludicrously lacking tact while Byrne's Mel is the supposed business brain but is so touchy-feely she won't trouble her partner with the truth about their financial crisis.
Then there is Hayek's Claire ho has reached the top of the fashion tree by stamping on people and taking credit for all good ideas.
So, how could two such inept women as Mia and Mel possibly gain the upper hand on her when she threatens to destroy them?
Well, because she seems to lose all the acumen she had previously developed.
It is typical of the nonsense which is overflowing in Like A Boss which is not only unfunny, it is downright boring.

Reasons to watch: Supposed girly comedy
Reasons to avoid: Nonsense and unfunny

Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 2/10

Did you know? Tiffany Haddish married the private investigator who she hired to find her father. The marriage ended in divorce.

The final word. Rose Byrne: "This story lives and dies on the chemistry between the two actresses playing the parts. I knew Tiffany from her work, and I was just such a fan.” EW.com
