153. The Present; movie review

THE PRESENT
Cert PG
87 mins
BBFC advice: Contains mild sex references, language, threat

It's a rarity for a mainstream movie to debut without the accompaniment of interviews with the director or its stars.
Therefore, I am left to presume that the silence was to avoid questions about Isla Fisher's separation from Sacha Baron Cohen, her long-time partner and the father of her three children.
The echoes of real life in The Present are obvious - its central plank is that a mother (Fisher) and father (Greg Kinnear) are planning to tell their three kids that they are breaking up.
Driven by their youngest, who is on the autism spectrum (Easton Rocket Sweda), the children embark on a mission to alter their parents' decision.
They have a giant stroke of luck - the family inherits a grandfather clock, and the young boy discovers it can turn back time.
Thus, he sets about trying to change the course of the day when his parents are due to make their dinnertime announcement.
After several attempts, he realises he cannot achieve his goal alone, so he enlists the help of his cynical sister (Shay Rudolph) and, later, their geeky brother (Mason Shea Joyce).
This is Groundhog Day for kids - with plenty of amusing turns coming from their elaborate ruses to alter destiny and the various outcomes.
However, the problem is that the finale is predictable from very early in the movie.
Despite the predictable ending, the children's zest and the spirited performances of Fisher and Kinnear keep us engaged.
I was left wondering whether she wished she could have found such a fun way to find resolutions to her marriage in real life.

Did you know? In 2015, Isla Fisher and her then husband Sacha Baron Cohen donated £335,000 to Save the Children as part of a programme to vaccinate Syrian children against measles and another £335,000 to the International Rescue Committee to help Syrian refugees.

The final word. No interview available.
