11. Stuck Apart (Azizler); movie review

STUCK APART (AZIZLER)
Cert 15
97 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong language

Usually in January, Mrs W would spend a weekend in north London watching Turkish films.
We have rather become used to our trips to Wood Green, Lee Valley and Enfield which are the only places in the UK where they are screened.
They tend to be released in clumps at the start and end of the year so we rarely see the area outside winter.
Anyway, we have become regular watchers of Turkish comedies over the past ten years but many have left us scratching our heads.
I'm afraid the same could be said for the first hour of Durul Taylan and Yagmur Taylan's Stuck Apart which we watched from the comfort of our living room on Netflix.
It stars Engin Günaydin as Aziz - a fairly drab middle-aged singleton who is going through a midlife crisis.
He is unhappy at work, wants to break up from his girlfriend and is frustrated that he is living with his siter, brother-in-law and nephew (Göktug Yildirim).
The latter is a devil-child and brings a couple of the funniest moments to a movie which didn't prompt many laughs from us.
The only other source of chuckles is Haluk Bilginer who plays Erbil, an elderly friend and co-worker who has not told his colleagues he is terminally ill.
The final 30 minutes of the movie concentrates on him and is all the better for it, offering pathos and giggles.
But I am afraid too much time had already been wasted on surreal distractions, a storyline which jolted around too much and scenes which weren't as funny as the movie's makers intended.
But at least we didn't make a 220-mile round-trip to find that out

Reasons to watch: Late humour-punctuated pathos
Reasons to avoid: Isn't funny enough

Laughs: Two
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity:  None
Overall rating: 4.5/10
