257. Lekh; movie review

130 mins
BBFC advice: Contains infrequent mild sex references, self-harm references
Who fancies two hours of unadulterated soppiness?
As tearjerking romances go, Lekh has it all. Two doe-eyed lovebirds and a match which can never be, punctuated by misfortune.
It was way too gooey for me but I can understand why some will swoon over Tania and Gurnam Bhullar.
I could certainly understand what his character, Rajveer, sees in the beautiful vibrant Ronak but why does she fall for a suitor who, let's face it, is rather wet?
In Manvir Brar's film, Ronak has returned to the village of her youth for a wedding, having emigrated, married and had a child.
Memories are evoked of her childhood - in particular, a naive and exciting teenage love for Rajveer who went to the same school.
The movie flicks between the present day and their awkward courtship which was mainly on the school bus driven by his widower father (Kaka Kautki).
Now her heart flutters again at the prospect of meeting the boy who meant so much many years previously.
Lekh is unashamed schmaltz - those who are not into romance need to look away and even those who are partial to the occasional love stories my need a sick bucket.
Some might suggest that Rajveer's obsession with Ronak is sweet but he goes to such lengths he is bordering on stalking.
And his reaction when they meet years later only emphasises his creepiness in my view. Quite why anyone with the spark of Ronak would fall for him was a little beyond me.
Anyway, I must have a heart of stone because, in my view, the longer the film progresses, the dafter the tie-up between the two becomes.
For me it was much too slushy but I guess some romantics may fall for Lekh.
