Armie Hammer has become this year's cinema curiosity.
Until Call Me By Your Name and Final Portrait I had seen him as a square-jawed action hero (even the dual roles in The Social Network were of athletes).
Thus, I have found his appearance in more cerebral, art-house movies something of a surprise.
Indeed, I felt, despite the film's considerable critical acclaim, that he was out of place in Call Me By Your Name but here, in Final Portrait, he is starting to warm to his new-found range..
In Stanley Tucci's movie, he plays James Lord, an American writer who befriends artist Alberto Giacometti and becomes subject of his.... final portrait.
Therefore, much of the movie is set in Giacometti's run-down Paris studio with Lord sitting for the mercurial painter.
Its outstanding feature is the bi-lingual contribution of Geoffrey Rush - he not only captures the eccentricities of Giacometti but he looks uncannily like him.
Rush is superb - agonising over the portrait - one moment appearing as if it is a matter of life or death and the next appearing as if he could not care less.
At the same time, it becomes clear that his bullishness is a veneer, covering a sea of self-doubt.
This even stretches to the women who share his life.
Yes, he is torn between his live-in lover (Sylvie Testud) who is devoted but with whom he has blistering rows and a beautiful and exotic prostitute (Clemence Poesy) to whom he is addicted.
Final Portrait will please fans of art house cinema on several levels - they will revel in Rush’s performance, enjoy the secrets behind the veil of Giacometti’s work and they bathe in the detail of the movie.
Those who are looking for something with a little more meat may find themselves going hungry.

Reasons to watch: interesting insight into the life of Giacometti
Reasons to avoid: lacking in much action and, by its nature, repetitive

Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Nudity: yes
Vomit: none
Overall rating: 7/10

Final Portrait was terrific. Didn’t know what to expect beforehand but it turned out to be a real gem. Geoffrey Rush is fantastic(as usual)
